CHARLESTON -- Coal mine operator Massey Energy has put out its first social responsibility report.

The 32-page document details Massey's financial and employee support for a variety of programs, including donations for education and volunteer fire departments and help re-establishing the American chestnut in Appalachia.

Chief Executive Don Blankenship says the report is aimed at helping the public understand Massey's positive contributions and to provide recognition for the company's nearly 6,000 employees.

Richmond, Virginia-based Massey is the nation's fourth-largest coal producer by revenue and has mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.

W.Va. race track given OK to offer poker

NITRO -- The cards are finally being dealt at Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center, the last of three West Virginia tracks to implement voter-approved table games.

State Lottery spokeswoman Nancy Bulla says the agency has given the Nitro track the go-ahead to start offering poker on Thursday.

Wednesday's decision followed two days of charity poker events that served as a test run for procedures and security measures while also giving the dealers practice.

Tri-State spokeswoman Kim Lawrence says the Big East Poker Room is set to open at 7 p.m. Thursday. The room holds 24 poker tables. Another 16 tables are available for special tournaments.

Lawrence says track officials hope to launch craps, roulette and blackjack by mid-September.

Two Northern Panhandle racetracks started offering table games last October.
